Pilion

ATTENTION: THE ROUTES IN THE PILION ARE NOT YET RECHECKED AFTER THE FLOODING IN 2023!

Milina Walk
Charming and not too strenuous circular walk with regular views on Milina and the sea. You may start and end the walk at any point, the track starts and ends at the Anthea Ecolodge of Jos & Elke. Mostly quiet country roads, some paths (at places overgrown) and a few stretches through olive groves without clear path but marked. The last part arond Milina and back to the Ecolodge is on asphalt.
The walk should take you about 3¼ hours, no water on the way but plenty of opportunities in Milina village (cafes, tavernas, shops).

Milina-Lafkos-Milina circular
Circular walk from Milina to Lafkos and back via another kalderimi. You may start and end the walk at any point. The track starts and ends with a loop to the Anthea Ecolodge of Jos & Elke. Most of the walk is on historical ‘kalderimia’, paved mule paths, partly shaded. The part arond Milina and back to the Ecolodge is on asphalt.
The walk should take you about 3½ hours. For food and drink you have plenty of opportunities in the villages Lafkos and Milina (cafes, tavernas, shops) and a spring next to the chapel as you go down from Lafkos to Milina (waypoint 05).

Kala Nera-Milies-Vyzitsa
A bit of a climb along a beautifully paved kalderimi until you reach the railroad track. In the weekends this is in use by a small train from Kato Lechonia to Milies. The easy walk along the track gives you ample opportunity to enjoy the views and the flowers. From Milies station you ascend further along the Chiron waterfall to Vyzitsa village.
This lovely Pilion village is famous for its wonderful ‘archontika’, classical mansions. After a stroll through the village you find yourself on the central square with some cafees. From the square you descend back to the railroad track, alternating through forest and olive groves. You follow the track to Ogla village where the descending path into Kala Nera starts. One of the most varied walks!
The walk should take you about 5 hours, water and cafees on the route.

Portaria-CentaurPath
You ascend by paved streets through the village Portaria towards the higher asphalt road. After 250m you veer into a country road. The last stretch takes you down again through a fairy dale by the "Centaur path".
The net walking time is 45 minutes, but do take the time to linger!

Chania-FeloukaFalls-Makrachi
You leave Chania village and follow the asphalt road until the ski resort parking lot. From there you follow a lovely and well-marked path downhill. All the time you hear the waters of the Felouka stream and side-streams (although also hooting trucks, especially in apple harvest season).
At the Plakatoura waterfall you may have your first rest, then you continue descending until the Poros waterfall and pool, where you may swim if you can stand the cold. Further down until the Kavouria waterfall with marvellous stone formations. Then a stretch through chestnut and apple orchards.
The path narrows and continues through forest. For the detour to this Aetofolia viewpoint you have to scramble and in my opinion it’s not worth the 25 minutes allez-retour. Past this junction it’s again a smooth forest path which ends on the asphalt road into Makrirachi village.
The walk should take you about 4¼ hours, no taps on the way.

Pouri-Makrinitsa
Walk from Pouri to Makrinitsa. Start at the main road at the bus stop, here you may park your car. Next to taverna Makis a chaircase leads to the church and taverna Polydroso: this is the start of the walk. Keep the church on your right hand side, from there you’ll find red markings.
You pass the chapel of Profitis Ilias and then Agia Marina. After the Agia Marina you may go left into the woods on another marked route, BUT THIS LEADS INTO THE MILITARY AIRBASE ZONE WITHOUT A FENCE SO YOU’LL BE ARRESTED WITHOUT EVEN REALISING YOU’RE IN FORBIDDEN AREA!
So: follow the dirt road and the markings, red paint marks and yellow signs ‘Makrinitsa’.
The walk should take you about 7½ hours, no water on the way.

Smolikas

Samarina-Mosia-Agia Paraskevi
Walk from Samarina along the Mosia saddle to Agia Paraskevi (Kerasovo). Vertigo sensitive! Some quite steep ascents and you might find bears on the trail.
From Samarina sporting grounds until the Mosia saddle the waymarking is good.
After the descent from the Mosia saddle there is a junction: straight continues to the Smolikas summit, right descends into the Vathilakkos valley. At the moment neither branches are well marked! As soon as you reach the Vathilakkos valley the waymarking is good again (yellow).

Agia Paraskevi-Palioseli
Walk from Agia Paraskevi (Kerasovo) along the Smolikas Drakolimni to Palioseli. Not very difficult technically and well marked.

Agia Paraskevi-Milia
Semi-circular track from Agia Paraskevi (Kerasovo) near Konitsa, around the Milia top. You walk along the Plaka footbridge and the springs Milia and Megagianni.

Agia Paraskevi-Agios Theodosios chapel
Allez-retour from Agia Paraskevi (or Kerasovo) near Konitsa, along some chapels to the Agios Theodosios chapel.

Agia Paraskevi-waterfall
From Agia Paraskevi (Kerasovo) drive east to the parking next to the ‘nerotrivio’, where path K2 starts. After 1.8km pay attention: do not follow the yellow markings which cross the Vathilakkos stream, but go sharply left uphill.
At 3km you reach a stream; here used to be a water-driven sawmill. Follow the stream uphill, yellow-red markings. You pass a pool where you may swim and then a side-stream. The path zigzags uphill and ends at a rock with painted “TERMA” = THE END. Do not go further! You have a great view on the waterfalls.
Same way back into the Vathilakkos valley. Should you have your own car at the parking, return there.
If someone took you, you may walk back to Agia Paraskevi village. In that case cross the Vathilakkos stream (the villagers intended to build a bridge in 2021, otherwise wade) and proceed until you’ve reached a wide stony path and follow this to the right. The yellow markings go left, to the Smolikas saddle.
After 2.4km you reach the Profitis Ilias church with some benches and a good spring. Half an hour later you reach Agia Paraskevi village.

Fourka
Track starts from the asphalt road leading Samarina-Kerasovo-Konitsa. First km descending through dense wood, follow the red-white signs as well as possible.
This first part was difficult to find, if anyone has additions, please let me now!
Path emerges on a rough cart track: follow this for a while and then continue along a ridge, partly on cattle paths. After a saddle you'll see the dirt road beneath you on your left hand side: descend towards this road and follow it. After a cattle coral go into the woods again and follow again cattle paths until you reach the concrete road into Fourka. Lovely café (O Zisis) on the square next to the church!

Tzoumerka

Politsa bridge-Arachthos river
A lovely hike from the Politsá bridge (between Fortosi/Kostitsi and Ambelochori) to the Arachthos river.
Coming from Fortosi/Kostitsi you'll drive past the Politsa bridge until the next hairpin bend to the left. Here you see a picknick hut. Park your car and follow the signs. You'll pass another picknick hut with marvelous views over the river; you may stop here if you want. The path proceeds and zigzags down to the river, ending on a pebble beach.
Same way back.
There are two vertigo-prone passages ('sares') over loose pebbles, but they're not difficult.

Chouliarades-Elliniko-Kostitsi
Walk between 3 villages in the South Pindos – Tzoumerka region. You may start from either of the villages and go to any one of the other. The walks join at the derelict watermill building in the stream bed of the Gorovesi, a side stream of the Arachthos river. Over the Arachthos river is the metal hanging bridge Lysia.
The easiest walk is from Elleniko. You may leave your car on the ‘Kambos’ (wp 011), descend to the Gorovesi stream and turn left. You’ll soon see the Lysia bridge.
A bit more strenuous is from Kostitsi. You may leave your car on the asphalt road between Kostitsi and Lazaina, near the information panel (wp 015), or descend along the mediocre dirt road (2 junctions: go right both times) and leave your car at the bottom near the yellow information panel where the path starts (wp 014).
Most strenuous is from Chouliarades as you have to leave the car at the car park next to the square and will have to walk the whole way. There are some signs from the EOS IOANNINON but the path is in some places difficult to find.

(The track starts in Chouliarades, crosses the Lysia bridge, veers to Elliniko and back and then continues to Kostitsi.)

NOTE: lots of loose stones on the way and quite sharp ascents/descents!

Tzoumerka Kalarrytes-Syrrako circular
From Kalarrytes starts an easy and well-marked path traversing the slope. Past a viewpoint with bench the ascent starts with some steep parts. An hour after the start you cross the Chrousia stream by a metal foot-bridge.
170m past the bridge you may go left for a detour to the old watermills, but the path is tricky and slippery!! 440m further is another junction where you may go left to a waterfall, only active in early spring.
Half an hour past the bridge you reach the asphalt road just outside Syrrako. Enter the village and follow the paved ‘kalderimi’ to the central square with several cafes. Proceed and keep the church on your right hand side. At the end of the village below you’ll find a watermill below you. Cross the bridge and the gate, and you’ll be on the asphalt road.
Follow the asphalt road for 1km until the sign [ΒΡΥΣΗ ΝΟΥΤΣΙ]. Here you may go left on a dirt road for the Noutsi spring. The road veers back to the asphalt road. 860m further on the asphalt road you see an information panel: just before the panel stone steps go left downhill.
Follow the path downhill, you’ll pass a telescope, some springs (little water!) and picknick benches.
Finally you reach the Kouïssa stone bridge. Just past the bridge you go left for an allez-retour to the Kouïassa watermill and waterfall. Same way back. 140m past the bridge you veer sharply left, ascending stone steps. (NB: the path straight reaches the asphalt road after 50m.)
The path ascends towards Kalarrytes and passes a spring and some iconostases.

Zagoria

Monodendri-Oxia-Monodendri
From Monodendri through the forest up until the asphalt road. From there you immediately enter the "Stone Forest" until you reach a meadow. Follow this meadow for about 1 kilometer and you've reached the viewpoint Oxia.
Back through the same meadow and the "Stone Forest" until you're again at the asphalt road. Follow this road for a while until you see a sign "Monodendri". Here you enter the forest again.

Monodendri-Vitsa-Monodendri
From Monodendri by a forest path to Vitsa central square. The path is well marked with red-white paint from the Zagori Mountain Race.
Back through the village of Vitsa until the asphalt road and by this road back to Monodendri.
